You also need to know how to maintain straight-and-level flight and how to turn an airplane properly. And you need to know how to read the instruments. Do you want to know how to get from anywhere to anywhere else?

It's called "cross country" flight, and every pilot who gets where he wants to go knows how to navigate. There are several ways: dead reckoning, pilotage, radio navigation, and global positioning (a form or radio navigation). My Flight Sim Navigation explains all of them.

Flying IFR (instrument flight rules) is a challenge that rewards a lot of flight simmers. But many of them fumble around, missing their destinations, missing their runways, crashing their airplanes, and so forth, because they don't make the effort to know what they're doing. You have to know how to rely totally on your instruments instead of your outside views, and you have to know the rules, too.
